NC 500

The North Coast 500 (NC500) is a spectacular road trip route that circles the northern Highlands of Scotland, starting and finishing in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands. Spanning just over 500 miles (516 miles/830 km), it is often described as Scotland’s answer to Route 66, showcasing some of the country’s most dramatic and diverse landscapes.

 

Beginning in Inverness, travelers typically set off west towards Ullapool, passing through rugged mountains, tranquil lochs, and winding coastal roads. From there, the route hugs the west coast, revealing white-sand beaches, sea cliffs, and tiny fishing villages, with highlights such as Achmelvich Bay, Lochinver, and the awe-inspiring mountains of Assynt and Sutherland.

 

Continuing northward, the road leads to the remote and wild far north of Scotland, where travelers encounter sweeping vistas around Durness, the Cape Wrath area, and Smoo Cave. The route then follows the north coast, skirting along dramatic cliffs and open seascapes, before reaching John O’ Groats and Duncansby Head, famous for its sea stacks.

 

Heading down the east coast, the scenery softens into rolling farmland, fishing towns, and historic castles such as Dunrobin Castle. Picturesque seaside villages like Helmsdale and Brora give way to quieter stretches of road before the route loops back inland towards Inverness.

 

The NC500 offers a mix of raw wilderness, rich history, and Highland hospitality. Along the way, travelers can explore ancient castles, whisky distilleries, dramatic hiking trails, and some of the most remote and unspoiled landscapes in Europe.
